Greetings to all TCOM Alumni!
What an exciting time for our alma mater!
UNTHSC’s new president, Dr. Scott Ransom, is an osteopathic physician (Ob/Gyn) with outstanding experience in private practice, academia, public health, research, and hospital and clinic management. Dr. Ransom has a strong vision for our school and for the continued development of osteopathic education.
A new era is beginning at TCOM, which many of us have seen grow from a bowling alley to a nationally recognized medical institution. And while growth always brings about change, TCOM still holds tight to its roots.
Rural Medicine
This year, TCOM welcomed the first group of students whose total
medical school experience will be focused on rural primary care.
The ROME (Rural Osteopathic Medical Education) program is the
first of its kind in America. This is important for several
reasons:
- Practicing rural family physicians in the state of Texas, including alumni, have direct input into the interviewing and clinical training of these students and the evaluation of this program.
- Training students for rural practice is a priority at TCOM.
- This program provides continuity with osteopathic principles and primary care, which has been a cornerstone of our medical school for over 30 years.
OMM
Dr. Ransom has also put forth a bold initiative to fund and
construct a new facility for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
research. This will provide the research and teaching space
necessary to carry on a program led by Dr. Scott Stoll, a 1991
TCOM graduate who directs the national Osteopathic Research
Center. Dr. Stoll and his associate executive director, Dr.
Hollis King, a 1983 TCOM grad, have already received seed
funding from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation for their
team’s groundbreaking work.
Alumni Leadership
Your Alumni Association was busy in 2006. We established funding
for several student scholarships, and we plan to secure the
resources for several more.
The TCOM Alumni Association cannot exist without you, and TCOM cannot continue its growth without a strong alumni group. We are asking you to take the time to join. Alumni are in an excellent position to really make a difference in our medical school, but we need your support to make that difference.
While we hope for your financial support, we also encourage your input. Please feel free to contact TCOM’s alumni office and e-mail us with your ideas. Visit this website often and keep up with your classmates.
Sincerely,
Robert DeLuca, D.O.
TCOM Class of 1984
